About Me

An NYC based Editor/ VFX Artist/ and Sound Designer, Roy Ford was born in Brazil and grew up in Nebraska and Missouri to a musical family, frequenting orchestral performances as a child, eventually landing on jazz drums as his instrument of choice.

Developing a particular interest in film after being bought Vertigo and Rear Window by his Dad, in high school he studied more Hitchcock and Soviet Montage Theory, later participating in the True/ False Documentary Film Festival’s youth program, studying documentary theory and ethics— going on to create 2 feature length (and not very good) documentaries, shot and edited on his phone.

When studying in UNCSA’s Editing & Sound department, Ford was mentored by editors Michael Miller ACE (Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing) and Julian Semilian ACE (Fish Have No Psychiatrists, Gazing Oozing With Mendacity), and sound editors Clint Smith (Avatar, There Will Be Blood, Up, Wall-E), and Mark Messick (Kominsky Method, John Adams)— learning industry standard post production techniques, both technical and artistic, whilst inhabiting positions ranging from Supervising Sound Editor & Rerecording Mixer, to VFX Supervisor and Colorist.

Subscribing to composer Richard Wagner’s idea of “Total Art” (minus the controversy), Ford’s post production philosophy is that each individual visual and auditory component should inform, and be informed by each other, to create a unique composite.

Currently Ford seeks to push the editing paradigm, presenting narrative information in novel ways, using mechanics such as split screens, multiple exposure, motivated wipes, kinestasis, match cutting, mixed media stylings, and music video techniques engineered to fit a particular story/aesthetic — while continuing to be commercially lucrative.

Inspired by his fascination with montage, Ford is most directly inspired by form-bending films such as Everything Everywhere All At Once, the Spiderverse series, Speed Racer, and City of God.

In his free time, Ford enjoys studying martial arts, studying visual art (much less violent), learning piano, and long walks on the beach.
